Every Friday KS3S access the “Fun with Food” structured, sensory-based intervention in which students explore a different food each week using all of their senses (looking, smelling, touching, and playing) before they are ever expected to taste it. The goal is not to get students to eat the food right away, but to build comfort, curiosity, and positive experiences with new or non-preferred foods.
During each session, students are encouraged to:
-
Look closely at the food’s color, shape, and size
-
Smell the food to learn its scent
-
Touch or manipulate the food to explore texture and temperature
-
Play with the food in developmentally appropriate ways (e.g., squishing, sorting, transferring, simple art activities)
-
Only if ready, taste the food with support and no pressure
This approach reduces anxiety around unfamiliar foods and builds tolerance gradually, making eating feel safe and fun rather than overwhelming.
