Students from KS4W shared a magical morning with their parents at the cafe. This was a wonderful celebration and a chance to show their families the variety of skills they have learned through community visits.
We have been working towards regulation, communication and money skills in the community and wanted to extend this to inviting families to join us.
Our first venture was the in-school MacMillan Coffee morning, and we were able to coax our young people to join their parents in the conference room with some success. But this was quite a difficult experience for some.
After that, we started walking our students to visit the local cafe and then eventually they were confident enough to be able to enter, sit and order a snack and drink.
We also invited parents in for a family coffee morning in school and our students made them cakes. It was a big step for our students to see their families in their classroom. They coped brilliantly after a few moments.
Following on from this, and thinking ahead to possible next steps after KS5, we extended our cafe experience at a different location and were able to invite the families to join us. It was a beautiful moment for all.
